Three rescued from downed float plane

The 70-year-old pilot of a float plane and his two passengers were rescued without injury after a crash landing Saturday morning.

The incident occurred in the north end of Gillies Lake, near Cobalt, approximately 140 kilometres north of North Bay. As the pilot was attempting to take off in his aircraft, the plane experienced mechanical problems. The Cobalt man directed the plane towards the lake and landed abruptly causing damage to the plane.

The three were rescued by a civilian boater and the plane was towed to the nearby docks.

Members of the Temiskaming Detachment of the OPP along with the Coleman Fire Department and the Temiskaming District Emergency Medical Services responded to the plane crash on Saturday, shortly after 10:30am.

The Transportation Safety Board and Ministry of the Environment are investigating.
