Open house in Sturgeon Falls to prepare for the International Plowing Match

When West Nipissing hosts the International Plowing Match and Rural Expo next September, it will need about 1,000 volunteers.

To start the recruiting process, the West Nipissing IPM committee is holding an open house this Thursday at the Sturgeon Falls Recreation Complex at the Marcel Noel Hall from 6:00pm to 9:00pm.

Neil Fox, the head of the committee, hopes the open house not only attracts people of West Nipissing but also residents of the North Bay area.

“The open house will introduce the event to the people especially if they’re not familiar with agriculture or have never been to an IPM,” Fox said.

“We want people to understand the scale and the size of this event.  It will be the most significant event that’s ever been hosted in West Nipissing and our region.”

The International Plowing Match and Rural Expo takes place in Verner spread across 1,000 acres of land.

Fox says a lot of people will be needed to fill hundreds of positions.

“People can volunteer to direct traffic, serve lunch to the plowing competitors, help people setup at the RV site or just do basic upkeep and maintenance,” Fox said.

As many as 80,000 people are expected to take in the IPM over its five day run in September.
