SIU says OPP officer not to blame for death of North Bay man

The Special Investigations Unit has closed the book on the death of a North Bay man who died while hiking in the Jocko River region with a friend.

The fatal hiking trip took place the Labour Day weekend when 28-year-old Michael Gauthier and his friend walked up a rock by the Jocko River in the Marten River region.

The SIU says suddenly Gauthier fell from the rock and hit the ground below.

The friend began applying CPR to Gauthier who was unconscious but when that didn’t work he went for help.

Because the area has no cell service, the friend canoed to a nearby home where 911 was called.

The SIU says an arriving OPP officer applied first aid but Gauthier died at the scene.

The SIU says Gauthier’s death was the result of complications from his fall and the actions of the officer had nothing to do with Gauthier’s death.

The SIU is an investigative body that takes over cases where people either have died or were hurt as a result of any action by police.
