New Council prepares to ‘grow North Bay’

Several members of the newly elected North Bay City Council met with the media Monday to lay out priorities for the first year of their term.

The new council will be sworn in Saturday at 11:00am at City Hall. Mayor Al McDonald believes they will be the only council in Ontario to be sworn on the first day permitted.

McDonald and Deputy Mayor-elect Tanya Vrebosch spoke of growing the city and being open for business. McDonald says all of the information gathered through consultation with business groups, the public, and the Baylor Report points to a need for growth in North Bay.

Tanya Vrebosch spoke of a program involving community stakeholders to entice former residents to return home. The program would hinge on having employment ready and matched for the returnee’s spouse, as well, an issue that has come up in previous employment searches, including medical doctor hiring.

The chairs of the committees were also introduced Monday. Mike Anthony will take on the Engineering, Public Works and Environmental Services portfolio, newcomer Johanne Brousseau will lead the Community Services committee, and Tanya Vrebosch will serve as Budget Chief and Chair of General Government.

The first set of committee and regular meetings of council will fall on Tuesday, December 4.
