First Lego League qualifier blasts off tomorrow

The competition is free and members of the public are welcome to take in the 4th Annual North Bay FIRST Lego League Qualifying Tournament tomorrow.

Opening ceremonies take place at 8:00am followed by a full day of table-top robotics matches and project presentations and judging.  Best spectator times are from 11:30am-3:30pm. Awards presentations should be complete by 4:30pm.

FIRST Lego League (FLL) teams from North Bay and area will gather at West Ferris Intermediate Secondary School to compete for bragging rights and a chance to participate at the Provincial FLL Championship in January.

The competition is sponsored by FIRST Team 1305 and many 1305 students have been spending the last three months mentoring the FLL students and their teams.

The tournament has grown from 11 teams in 2015 to 20 teams this year.  This means, more than 200 kids (age 9 to 14) and over 50 mentors will be descending on West Ferris tomorrow. Teams travel from Sturgeon Falls, Corbeil, Powassan, Sundridge and as far away as Peterborough to compete.

The theme of this year’s FLL challenge is “Into Orbit.”  Area FLL teams, composed of up to 10 students, are tasked with building a LEGO Mindstorms EV3 robot that autonomously completes “missions” on a competition table.  As part of the process, teams learn more about some of the challenges of space travel and how it can be improved upon.

Teams also create a project and presentation to showcase a problem (centred on human space travel) and their proposed solution.  A panel of judges rates the team on numerous criteria and provides members with feedback.
