Environment Canada says ‘significant’ winter storm expected

Environment Canada has released a special weather statement, in effect for North Bay, Powassan, Mattawa, West Nipissing and French River.

A significant winter storm expected this afternoon into Friday night and travel may become hazardous from this afternoon into early Saturday morning.

A Colorado low that is tracking towards Ontario will bring a mixed bag of weather to Northeastern Ontario this afternoon into tomorrow. Regions from Sault Ste. Marie to North Bay may see 5-10 centimetres of snow and ice pellet accumulation before precipitation changes to rain overnight. In these regions, there is also a threat of a few hours of freezing rain tonight. A freezing rain warning may be required. Precipitation should change back to snow Friday as much colder air moves in.

Please continue to monitor alerts and forecasts issued by Environment Canada. To report severe weather, send an email to [email protected] or tweet reports using #ONStorm.
