What Nipissing employers want in education and experience

The Labour Market Group found that during October, of employers who posted job openings, about a third wanted prospective students to have a university or college education.

And between both types of these education platforms, employers favoured a college-trained employee over a university graduate more than twice as often.

Of all the education levels requested, employers were looking to hire university students in 9.8 percent of the postings compared to 23.8 percent of the postings where the employer wanted a college student for the job.

By far the greatest education level requested were people with a high school background.

In this instance, 49.7 percent of the job postings indicated the person should have a high school background.

Additionally, LMG also found that employers were also looking for people with no formal education background.

It says 16.8 percent of the job postings didn’t ask for any formal education.

When it comes to experience for work during October, the vast majority of the jobs were entry-level and made up 42 percent of the total list.

Second on the list at 31.5 percent were employers who were looking for people with one to three years of experience.

Another 13 percent of the posted jobs wanted people with three to five years of work under their belts while 9.4 percent of the listed jobs needed to fill vacancies where the person had one month to 12 months of work experience.

Employers still needed people with extensive experience, but the list wasn’t very long.

Among these listed jobs, only 4.1 percent of them indicated that applicants should have five or more years of experience before submitting an application.
