North Bay City Council has directed staff to proceed with the Family of Rotary Splash Pad Project.

Phase one of the project has been costed at approximately $580,000, with the Rotary group contributing $500,000 and the City of North Bay, the remainder.

Construction on the first phase is slated to begin behind the North Bay Museum as early in the spring as possible, with the official opening date to the public to come this summer.

This project has seen many delays over several years but Councillor Dave Mendicino, who serves on the community services committee, gave an assurance after Tuesday’s meeting, saying “it will be completed sometime in the summer.”

Phase one includes infrastructure work, site prep, and installing the splash pad itself. Washrooms and change rooms will be included in the first phase, as will some preliminary landscaping.

Mendicino says the second phase will include sun shelters, picnic tables, benches, and the remaining landscaping. This phase of the splash pad project will cost approximately $150,000, funds Mendicino said the committee is attempting to secure government grants to cover. “Phase two will not be started unless the money from the grants is in place,” he said.
