Date set for trial in Richey murder

The trial dealing with the murder of Tess Richey will not begin for another year.

A trial date has been set today for the man charged with the first-degree murder of the former North Bay resident. Kalen Schlatter will stand trial beginning on January 13, 2020. Police originally charged Schlatter with second degree murder in February 2018 but later upgraded the charges.

Richey, who still has family in North Bay, was found dead by her mother days after her family reported her missing after a night out in Toronto in November 2017. Police say the accused and Richey met for the first time in the hours before she was killed by compression of the neck. Richey, who was 22, was found in a stairwell in the Village section of Toronto, near where she was last captured on security camera footage released by Toronto Police during the investigation.
