North Bay police to launch Know Your Neighbour program

North Bay residents will soon see a new crime-fighting tool from the local police.

The program is called Know Your Neighbour.

Special Constable John Schultz says in the near future the service will distribute Know Your Neighbour cards to homeowners.

Schultz says the goal is for people in the same general area to know the names of streets and house numbers if possible.

“So if you looked outside your window and saw someone breaking into the neighbour’s home behind you, would you know what street that it is,” asked Schultz.

Schultz says it’s by knowing this kind of information and relaying it precisely to 911 that gets police to the scene of a crime faster.

He adds when police can get to a crime scene in quick order, chances are the break-in might still be in progress and the perpetrator can be caught in the act.

Schultz says the Know Your Neighbour cards will be distributed by the students who make up the Youth in Policing initiative which the local service expects to run again this year.
