Local Payless among hundreds in chain worn down by financial trouble

Another local bricks and mortar store will be closing its doors as the North Bay Payless ShoeSource location and 247 others like it in Canada will soon be no more.

Some 2,400 jobs will be lost in Canada as Payless ShoeSource Canada Inc., prepares to shut its doors following a series of liquidation sales. Reports say the stores will close between March and May.

The move comes days after the American Payless company announced outlets would shutter their doors. While there was initially no word from the Canadian chain, an official announcement came today that all 248 shops would close for good.

In January 2018, the Sears Canada outlet in the Northgate Shopping Centre, where the local Payless store is located, also closed its doors. The retail space where Sears once had a footprint has not been repurposed.

The company, based in Kansas, has been operating at a loss (over $12 million in 2018) and says it will file for creditor protection in Canada as payments are late for rent for hundreds of outlets.

Calls to Payless Canada and the Northgate Shopping Centre for comment were not immediately returned. MyNorthBayNow.com will update this story as more details become available.
