Deer injured and alone in West Ferris

Multiple sightings have been reported of a young (some say female) deer in West Ferris with a broken right front leg.

Tonight, the deer was spotted hopping on three legs in the Labreche Drive and Marshall Park Drive area before ducking into a nearby backyard. According to a bystander, the injured deer has been seen frequently along the Parks Creek trail.

A call to the North Bay Police Service followed by a conversation with a dispatcher revealed the authorities are aware of the deer and its injury and the decision has been made to let the animal be. According to the dispatcher, the recent sightings by police and citizens indicate the deer is getting around well enough on three legs.

Despite its surprising agility on three legs, motorists in the area are reminded to keep an eye out for the young animal emerging from between towering snowbanks as it tries to survive the winter alone and injured.
