Sudbury an option for North Bay cannabis shoppers

Until supply issues are cleared up, North Bay cannabis shoppers will have to purchase the product online or head to Sudbury.

One of Northern Ontario’s two initial cannabis retail shops will be located a 75-minute drive away from North Bay and is eligible to open April 1.

The store will be called “Highlife” and will be located off the Kingsway in a former shoe store in a strip mall across from the Silver City Cinemas.

The store’s operator, Anton Lucic, was one of 25 successful applicants in the province’s lottery held by the Alcohol and Gaming Commission of Ontario, in January.

The other lottery spot for Northern Ontario went to Saturninus Partners, although this group has not yet gone public with details of its operation.

Minister of Finance and Nipissing MPP Vic Fedeli has blamed the federal government for its handling of the cannabis legalization, saying the blame for the supply issues falls squarely at the feet of the Trudeau Liberals.

After going through background checks and providing supporting tax and financial documents, the winners of the lottery had to submit a $50,000 letter of credit plus a $6,000 non-refundable fee to the AGCO. Failed background checks would open a spot for those on the waitlist, also determined by the January lottery. There is a reported $25,000 penalty for proponents who do not open by the end of April.

In one of its final acts in power, the previous edition of North Bay City Council voted in favour of permitting brick and mortar cannabis shops in the city last September (see video below), paving the way for an operation to grow once a licence is secured.
