Ice removal starts at Parks Creek

Snowmobilers are being told to stay away from the mouth of the Parks Creek on Lake Nipissing.

The warning is from the North Bay-Mattawa Conservation Authority as it begins ice removal operations from Parks Creek near Lakeshore Drive.

The operation is an annual one to ease the spring runoff once the ice begins to melt.

Conservation authority spokesman Troy Storms says this year the ice will be removed a short way into Lake Nipissing as well as upstream beyond Lakeshore Drive.

The annual operation is carried out to protect people and property from the risk of flooding because of the proximity of dwellings by Parks Creek.

Residents along Lakeshore may experience minimal disruptions during the removal operation.

As the ice is broken up, it will be piled on the banks of Parks Creek and then nature will take its course as it begins to melt under spring temperatures.

The conservation authority is asking the public to stay away from the piles.

Anyone who needs additional information can call the NBMCA at 474-5420.
