Cardinal leads award winners; O’Connell talks up North Bay

Canadian Screen Awards week wrapped up with a gala affair in Toronto last evening and stars from locally-filmed productions were front and centre.

Cardinal stars Billy Campbell and Karine Vanasse both captured lead actor awards while Jerry O’Connell of Carter talked up North Bay in an interview with ET Canada on the red carpet and was a nominee for lead actor in a drama series.

Cardinal: Blackfly Season garnered 14 nominations and took home seven awards, including Best Limited Series or Program, directing, and writing nods this past week, tying with Anne with an E for most wins.

Cardinal, currently filming in North Bay, saw its stars Campbell (Best Lead Actor in a Drama Program or Limited Series) and Vanasse (Best Lead Actress in a Drama Program or Limited Series) take home hardware.

Campbell has now won in back-to-back years in the category. Cardinal is based on the works of Giles Blunt who grew up in North Bay and who made the city the basis for the fictional backdrop of the show, Algonquin Bay.

O’Connell attended the ceremony with wife Rebecca Romijn. He and the cast and crew of Carter will begin filming the second season in North Bay this spring.
