Conservation Authority ready in the event Parks Creek floods

The North Bay-Mattawa Conservation Authority is ready in the event Parks Creek is at risk of being overrun with water and flooding nearby homes in the Lakeshore region.

Sue Buckle, Manager, Communications and Outreach for the NBMCA, says Parks Creek has a flood-control structure in place to counter flooding.

Water from Parks Creek flows into Lake Nipissing.

Buckle says the risk of flooding occurs if the water level of the lake rises to a height that it starts sending water back into Parks Creek and once that happens low-lying areas could flood.

However, NBMCA has a dam with gates and logs in place at Parks Creek to prevent this from happening.

She adds the Conservation Authority also has two pumps ready to go if Parks Creek overflows.

One of the pumps is built into the flood-control structure.

“Plus we have a large portable pump that we would bring in to help pump the water back into Lake Nipissing,” Buckle said.

“The goal is to keep the water level at Parks Creek down so it doesn’t flood the neighbouring properties.”

Buckle said the last time the NBMCA had to use pumping action to mitigate the risk of flooding was 2007.
