MNRF investigating ice huts left on area lakes

There was lots of advance warning that this past Sunday was the deadline to remove ice huts from North Bay area lakes including Lake Nipissing.

Despite all the notices, some ice huts remain on the frozen waterways.

Michah Plourde, a Conservation Officer with the Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry, says a number of complaints have come to the MNRF in connection with ice huts still on the lakes.

Plourde says the ministry is now in the process of investigating and following up on the complaints.

He says the first step for the Conservation Officers will be to determine why the huts were left on the ice beyond the deadline.

Then depending on the circumstances, the owner of an ice hut could face charges or be let off with a warning.

Plourde says some owners can end up in court in more serious cases.

He adds in these instances the penalties can be significant and can include an order to not only remove the ice shack but to also clean up any possible debris.

Plourde also asks members of the public to call the MNRF or Crime Stoppers if they see ice huts on area lakes.
