Buckle up today and every day

The members of the North Bay Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police hope to see all drivers and passengers safely buckled in as theĀ Easter Long Weekend Seatbelt Campaign continues today.

A driver/passenger can be charged and face a fine between $200 to $1000 and demerit points for seat belt infractions. Drivers are legally responsible for ensuring that passengers under the age of 16 are buckled up in a seatbelt, or an appropriate child car seat belt or booster.

If you wear a seatbelt properly, you are more likely to survive a crash. Seatbelt law enforcement and education are OPP traffic safety priorities; the OPP conducts provincial seatbelt campaigns every year to raise awareness of seatbelt use and their effectiveness in saving lives in the event of a collision. The OPP says, “Evidence shows that Ontario’s seatbelt law works and has helped strengthen our leading road safety record.”

The Ministry of Transportation’s (MTO) website has comprehensive information/videos about properly restraining your child and car seat installation. If you have any questions please go to www.mto.gov.on.ca.
