Mattawa declares state of emergency and flood warning extended in Nipissing District

Mattawa Mayor Dean Backer says residents in low-lying areas who are adjacent to the Ottawa River and Mattawa River may have to evacuate.

The warning comes as the town declares a state of emergency.

Backer says residents in this situation need to consider and prepare for a possible evacuation.

The town has closed Mattawan Street from Main to Sid Turcotte Park Road.

Timmins Street has also been closed.

The town is telling people not to drive onto those streets because their integrity cannot be guaranteed and they may be hazardous.

Water levels are rising and the town is making sandbags available.

If you need any call the town hall at 744-5611.

The declaration of a state of emergency comes as the flood warning for Nipissing District has been extended until this Friday.

The Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry says rainfall amounts of 10 to 15 mm are expected from Wednesday to Thursday in the southern half of the district.

Thunderstorms are also expected and the MNRF says during thunderstorms the rainfall amount could jump to 25 mm or more.

Lake Nipissing continues to remain at a flood damage level and the ministry expects it to rise a bit more over the coming days.

The MNRF says shorelines and banks by waterways are slippery and unstable and considering the water temperature is still very cold, they could be hazardous.

Lake Nipissing isn’t the only major waterway that’s rising.

The same weather that’s increasing the height of Lake Nipissing is also seeing the water level rise at Lake Temiskaming and the Ottawa River.

Many area water bodies are reporting localized flooding and among them are the Sturgeon River, the Upper French River and Mattawa River.

The MNRF will continue to monitor the weather and suggests residents do the same.
