Fires 14 hours apart at same address deemed suspicious

North Bay Fire and Emergency Services responded to two fires at 20 Passmore Avenue, one on Victoria Day, one early this morning.

There were no injuries suffered in either incident, according to Deputy Fire Chief Greg Saunders.

The first fire occurred at just after 12:00pm yesterday. Saunders said firefighters arrived on the scene in under five minutes. “Upon arrival, there was substantial fire in the kitchen of the home. Firefighters entered the home and very quickly extinguished the fire.”

Saunders said at just before 2:00am today, firefighters again responded to the same home for another structure fire.

Saunders reports, “This time firefighters were faced with a very significant fire in the crawlspace of the home. This fire was more significant and more challenging to extinguish. Firefighters worked very hard and successfully managed the incident but not before significant damage had occurred.”

The Ontario Fire Marshal has been called in to help determine the cause as Saunders said the fire is deemed suspicious. The OFM will be working with the North Bay Police Service as this investigation continues.
