MNRF helping area residents with shoreline damage from spring flooding

Residents of West Nipissing and Mattawa who saw their shorelines damaged by the spring flooding are getting support from the provincial government.

The Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry has created a site where property owners can apply online for a work permit to repair shorelines that were washed away by the floods.

The process also lets the owners carry out erosion control measures right away.

The MNRF is also launching a website that gives residents access to early flood warning messages.

The Surface Water Monitoring Centre webpage provides early information that lets property owners not only stay safe in the event of oncoming flood conditions but also to reduce flood damage by taking action.

The MNRF has also announced the appointment of Doug McNeil who becomes Ontario’s Special Advisor on flooding.

It will be McNeil’s job to advise the provincial government on how to reduce flooding impacts and to help ensure communities that have been hit with flooding can recover quickly.

MNRF Minister John Yakabuski says McNeil will look at everyone who is involved in flood management and see if there are ways to improve the system.

McNeil will assess the current roles and responsibilities of governments, agencies and the organizations that are currently part of flood management.

Nipissing MPP Vic Fedeli says “it’s important for people of Nipissing and across Ontario to have accurate information about flooding and resources they can access when they need it”.
