Police provide tips if your wallet is stolen

A couple of wallets going missing in North Bay has prompted some tips from the local police.

Police say if credit cards are in your wallet and it’s lost or stolen, cancel the cards as soon as possible.

Police say thieves can rack up purchases pretty quickly on lost or stolen credit cards.

Report the missing or stolen wallet to police and explain the time and place it was no longer in your possession.

Police add in addition to the credit cards, tell them if other documents like a license or health card were also in the wallet.

In the case of financial related cards, police say contact Equifax or TransUnion to create a fraud alert or credit freeze on our name.

The measures will stop people from using your cards.

In the case of a driver’s license, birth certificate or health card, call Service Ontario.

If it’s a federal document like your Social Insurance Number card or a passport, call the Services Canada office.

Police say on July 16th a person going into a store on Main Street left her wallet on the counter and when the woman returned a few minutes later for the wallet, it had been picked up by a man.

Earlier the same day a man with a backpack that contained clothing and a wallet lost everything when he put the backpack down and a woman picked it up when the owner wasn’t looking.
