Aerospace award goes to former Canadore student

A former Canadore College alumni who is now an Associate Professor of Aviation at the University of Waterloo is this year’s recipient of a prestigious aerospace award.

Doctor Suzanne Kearns will receive the Northern Lights Aero Foundation Award at a gala dinner September 28th in Richmond Hill.

Also known as the “Elsie”, the award is named after Elsie Gregory MacGill who was an aviation pioneer and human rights advocate.

The award recognizes women in seven categories: business, education, engineering, government, pioneer, rising star and flight.

Kearns is being recognized in the flight category for her outstanding contribution to aviation and aerospace.

Kearns’ career has been spent in aviation education through lectures, publications, e-learning and guest speaking at events.

She became a pilot when she was 17 at which point her future was set when it comes to aviation.

Kearns got a diploma in helicopter flight training from Canadore and later earned a bachelor’s degree in aeronautical science and a master’s in human factors and systems engineering.

The Elsie awards are in their 11th year of celebrating women in Canada’s aerospace and aviation industries.
