Courtesy walk plays role in pedestrian struck by vehicle downtown

An injured woman has been transported to the NBRHC by paramedics after being struck by a car while crossing in the 100 block of Main Street East, shortly after 1:00pm. The victim was conscious and was comforted by citizens who shielded her from the sun as she laid on Main Street. NBPS officers remained on the scene taking witness statements and performing a collision investigation.

The driver of the vehicle that struck the woman is unlikely to be charged, according to police, because he had the right of way. There are no crosswalks mid-block on Main Street, only “courtesy walks.” According to witnesses, the injured woman crossed between stopped vehicles at the courtesy walk on the east side of the street but then stepped in front of the vehicle headed southbound in the western lane.
