Fedeli believes feds dragging their feet with joint government funding program

Nipisisng MPP Vic Fedeli hopes the federal Liberal government isn’t playing an election game with the Investing in Canadian Infrastructure Program (ICIP).

Fedeli’s comments come after the province announced it is helping North Bay with four transit projects worth a total of $900,000.

Fedeli says the province is covering one-third of the total cost and the City of North Bay has committed its share.

“The municipality is ready with its money and ready to go and we’re excited about these projects,” Fedeli said.

“We want to get the shovels in the ground and now it’s up to the feds.”

However, Fedeli says so far there hasn’t been a word from the federal government for its share of the funding approval and he believes he knows why.

“We know they’re dragging their feet,” he said.

“To be quite honest they’re probably waiting closer to the election to make it an election splash.”

The federal election is October 21st.

Fedeli hopes the federal government doesn’t wait months to make the transit announcement.

“I hope we don’t play politics,” he said.

“These are people who want to get these projects going.”

Fedeli says some of his fellow Progressive Conservative MPP colleagues have put posts on social media where the federal government hasn’t approved projects in their ridings.

He says his colleagues are concerned that if the federal Liberals are playing politics and delaying ICIP announcements then municipalities are going to lose another season of work with winter on the horizon once fall arrives.
