Twiggs branches out, eyes Barrie and beyond

A small-town small business success story is evolving once more.

It was announced Friday that a few North Bay businesses would be receiving funding from the Northern Ontario Heritage Fund. For the most part, they were all businesses based in the mining field, but one stuck out. That business is Twiggs Coffee Roasters.

Twiggs Distribution received $347,238 to expand its storage and processing space.

“We are beyond excited about this,” Laura Twigg, owner of Twiggs on Fraser Street in North Bay, said shortly after the funding announcement.

“We worked really hard, and we are very excited to be receiving this funding from the government and to be expanding our business.”

The funding will be going to help build the operation’s distributing company, called Twiggs Distribution. The expansion will help to create more jobs in North Bay.

“They’ve made a business case. They’ve shown the province of Ontario that with this additional money that will help them grow their business that they will be able to expand and hire people and keep the people on permanently after the funding has helped them get started,” Nipissing MPP Vic Fedeli said.

“I love my Twiggs. I think my Twiggs card is the most worn-out Twiggs card of anybody. I have told them to please come and open one outside my office in Toronto. I would love to see that happen,” Fedeli added.

So with that said, it begs the question. There are four Twiggs locations, are there any more in the works?

“The funding is going to help with the creation and building of our warehouse which will support the stores that we currently have, along with the ones we have coming shortly,” Twiggs said.

“I can say we are in the works for at least as far as Barrie. Toronto would definitely be the next step and then who knows from there.”
