Safety tips for Halloween

Halloween is Thursday and the North Bay Police Services wishes to see your children have a safe and happy Halloween.

“Motor vehicle collisions involving pedestrian children are more than twice as likely to occur on Halloween,” Constable John Schultz said.

The popular trick or treating hours for children are between 5:30pm and 9:30pm according to the police. Children are excited during their trick or treating and they move in unpredictable ways so drivers are asked to allow for extra time and to lower their speed.

Some safety tips include reminding your trick or treaters to look both ways when they cross streets and to use traffic signals and crosswalks if available. Always walk on sidewalks or paths. If there are no sidewalks, walk facing traffic as far to the left as possible. Watch for cars that are turning or backing up. Teach children to never dart out into the street or cross between parked cars.

When getting together costumes for the kids, Schultz asks parents to be creative, but safe.

“Decorate costumes and bags with reflective tape or stickers, and if possible choose light colours. Choose makeup and face paint when possible to avoid masks, which can obstruct the vision of the children and also have kids carry glow sticks or flashlights to have them seen by drivers.”

As for homeowners, you are asked to keep the path to your home clean and free of obstacles.

North Bay Fire and Emergency Services will also be hosting their annual Haunted House at Fire Station One.
