Two structure fires on Halloween

Fire crews responded to two structure fires today.

One was a small blaze on High Street that was controlled quickly.

“It was a relatively small fire in nature,” North Bay Fire and Emergency Services Captain Terry Hargrave explained. “Guys got here quickly and did a great job, very minimal damage.”

As for the cause, the investigation is still ongoing into the matter.

“Just a reminder of the importance of leaving candles in a safe location, smoking, that kind of stuff. Always check your fire extinguishers and smoke detectors,” Hargrave said.

The second fire was a much bigger blaze and happened at a home on Maher Street. Just as crews were arriving, the heat snapped a power line running to the house causing the live wire to fall onto the road.

“When crews arrived, we had a self-venting fire upon us,” Fire Chief Jason Whitely said. “Crews immediately started an interior attack and search of the building. The fire flashed on us and we had to back down as we had power lines coming down and low water pressure.”

Through the initial attack, a member of the fire crew suffered a second-degree burn on his hand. As for a fire flashing, that means a fire creates a pressure that ignites everything in the room.

As for the cause, Whiteley said it was too soon to speculate.

“It is way too early to speculate. It will be quite a while before speculation on the cause.”

During the fight, the crews were still searching for a cat within the home, but all residents of the house were confirmed safe. MyNorthBayNow reporters will update once more information becomes available.
