Nipissing growing moustaches for a cause

Students at Nipissing University are growing moustaches for a good cause.

The students will be raising money for men’s health, or more specifically, prostate cancer, testicular cancer, and mental health and suicide prevention. Nipissing University Student Union (NUSU) and Nipissing University Lakers Athletics will be collaborating.

“Participating in this initiative gives us the platform to speak to male-identified students who may not know about resources they can access on campus or within the community,” said Charlotte Foster, NUSU VP Advocacy & Awareness. “This campaign is extremely important as it brings awareness to the need for men to take their health seriously, get checkups with their doctor, know what to look for, and speak out.”

According to the Movember Foundation, 1 in 7 Canadian men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer in their lifetime, while testicular cancer continues to be the most common cancer in young men. Statistics Canada adds that the suicide rate for males is three times higher than the rate for females.

The Lakers volleyball team will be hosting their third annual “Movember Match” on Saturday, November 9 when they welcome the McMaster Marauders. Women’s volleyball play at Noon and men’s volleyball play at 2:00pm in the Robert J. Surtees Student Athletics Centre.

“We are excited to be working with NUSU on the Movember campaign again and hosting the Movember Match to raise money and awareness for this project,” said Dan Miller, Lakers Men’s Volleyball Assistant Coach. “It is a cause that is close to many of our students, particularly our athletes, and we look forward to continuing to break the stigma surrounding men’s health.”

NUSU will be co-hosting a Zumba night on November 21st with The Studio. It starts at 6:30pm at the Summit with a $2 donation to the Movember foundation.
