Trial set to begin over Tess Richey murder

The jury selection process has begun for the trial of Kalen Schlatter.

Schlatter is charged with first-degree murder in the November 2017 death of Tess Richey.

Tess Richey, the youngest of five sisters with ties to North Bay was found dead in the Village section of Toronto after a night out with a friend.

Richey was first reported missing by her family and later found by her own mother, who had travelled from North Bay to search for her. She found her daughter in the stairwell of a house under renovation nearby where witnesses had last seen her.

Toronto Police Service faced criticism over a lack of effort in the attempt to locate the missing woman. Police add that Richey died from “neck compression.”

Schlatter was first charged with second-degree murder, but the charges were bumped up to first-degree murder in March 2018.

Schlatter’s trial is expected to begin on Thursday.
