OPP: Low-speed highway foot chase ends in capture

(POWASSAN, Ont.) Police say a search of a vehicle led them to locate quantities of suspected drugs, including cocaine, heroin and cannabis; and, a loaded handgun.

Last Tuesday at approximately 10:00 p.m., officers from the North Bay Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police were conducting radar patrol on Highway 11 in the Municipality of Powassan.

Officers observed a vehicle speeding and conducted a traffic stop. Upon speaking to the vehicle occupants officers began an investigation. As officers were arresting them, the driver fled on foot and was arrested by police after a short foot pursuit.

As a result of the police investigation, a 28-year-old from North York, Ontario, has been charged with:

  • Possession of a Schedule I Substance for the Purpose of Trafficking – Two
  • Possession of a Schedule I Substance
  • Possession of a Loaded Prohibited or Restricted
  • Occupant of Motor Vehicle Knowing There was Prohibited or Restricted Weapon
  • Unauthorized Possession of Weapon
  • Unauthorized Possession of a Prohibited or Restricted Firearm
  • Careless Use of Firearm, Weapon, Prohibited Device or Ammunition
  • Possession of a Firearm or Ammunition contrary to Prohibition Order -Two Counts
  • Resist Peace Officer
  • Possession of Cannabis for the Purpose of Selling

A 22-year-old from Toronto has been charged with the following:

  • Possession of a Schedule I Substance for the Purpose of Trafficking – Two
  • Possession of a Schedule I Substance
  • Possession of a Loaded Prohibited or Restricted Firearm
  • Occupant of Motor Vehicle Knowing There was Prohibited or Restricted Weapon
  • Knowledge of unauthorized Possession of Weapon
  • Unauthorized Possession of a Weapon
  • Unauthorized Possession of a Prohibited or Restricted Firearm
  • Careless Use of Firearm, Weapon, Prohibited Device or Ammunition
  • Possession of Cannabis for the Purpose of Selling

Both accused were to make appearances at the Ontario Court of Justice in North Bay, last Wednesday.
