Deadline to remove ice huts approaching

The deadline for removing your ice shack from the lake is fast approaching.

The Ministry of Natural Resources (MNRF) says the deadline for hut owners to remove them in Fisheries Management Zone 11 (FMZ 11) is March 31.

FMZ 11 covers all of Lake Nipissing, east to the Ottawa River and as far north as New Liskeard.

The MNRF says fines for not removing your ice shack in time can be as little as $150 to as much as $25,000. If the MNRF has to retrieve the hut, often in open water, the costs of the recovery are included as part of the fine.

The fishing season on Lake Nipissing closed on March 15.
