Canadore to receive emergency funding

Canadore College is set to benefit from the Ontario government’s announcement of $25 million in emergency funding for post-secondary institutions.

Canadore will receive $684,487 of the funds. The funds will be used to continue student supports such as on-line academic support (tutoring) and counselling.

“Canadore staff continue working hard to support our students and community during a very difficult time,” said Canadore College President George Burton.  “The funding announced today will enable Canadore to continue with on-line supports for students and will help ensure the resources are in place to support their success.”

College and Universities Minister, Ross Romano, announced on Tuesday that the province will be providing the emergency funding to colleges, universities and Indigenous institutes in an attempt to mitigate some of the early costs of addressing the COVID-19 outbreak.

Canadore, along with many post-secondary schools across Canada has had to switch to online classes during the pandemic. However, some students will need to return to the school eventually to complete practical components of their courses. According to the college, plans are being made to accommodate the students when the pandemic is over. Plans for semester completion are in draft form and are fluid. Canadore says they will communicate the plans once they have a better idea of the COVID-19 infection curve public restrictions and provincial recovery plans.

“We thank the government and Minister Romano for their commitment to our students and to the successful completion of the students’ programs,” Burton said. “This emergency funding will truly make a difference.”
