Callander Council welcomes two new members

After a couple of months of uncertainties, Callander’s council is back to full strength.

At a special meeting earlier this week, Mayor Rob Noon, along with Councillors Jordy Carr and Linda Alkins welcomed Irene Smit and Daryl Vaillancourt to the fold.

Smit is a local real-estate agent with Coldwell Banker, while Vaillancourt is a former member of North Bay City Council, and works for the Ontario Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals.

The pair was chosen from a shortlist of nine candidates, a list that had been whittled down from 18 applicants.

Since January, the five-person council lost two of its members beginning with the sudden passing of both Mayor Hector “Hec” Lavigne in January and Councillor Maurice Turgeon in early March. Since then, Noon, who was acting as deputy mayor, was sworn in as Callander’s Mayor in mid-March, the first time since 2001 the community has seen a new mayor.
