Lack of air traffic prompts airport to ask for help

With less air travel because of the COVID-19 pandemic, the Jack Garland Airport has asked North Bay City Council for some help.

The airport is asking for a monthly subsidy of $200,000 to help cover a sharp drop in revenue.

As first reported by the North Bay Nugget, the airport is forecasting a 70-80 per cent drop in revenue because of the suspension of air service from its largest scheduled provider. Although not named, Air Canada recently extended the suspension of its Toronto to North Bay route until May 31.

With the potential return of air travel, officials with the airport says there is no guarantee that traffic will return to the prior historic levels right away.

The City of North Bay has owned the airport since 1986, and the subject will be discussed Tuesday during a virtual council meeting. The subsidy could last until December, but another option the city is planning to look at is whether to redirect $400,000 of its capital funds to operations at Jack Garland Airport.

The additional funds, if approved, would provide the airport with an additional two months of operation.
