Saunders: Renovations could be cause of basement fire

A fire on Morin Street has resulted in some extensive fire and smoke damage according to North Bay Fire and Emergency Services.

According to officials, the fire started in the basement of the home on Saturday. There was nobody living in the home at the time as the house was undergoing renovations.

“The cause of the fire is under investigation but may be related to the renovation work that was being completed,” said Deputy Fire Chief Greg Saunders. “Firefighters were on scene in under four minutes and were able to successfully extinguish the fire without incident.”

“Basement fires are exceptionally dangerous for firefighters to manage as firefighters are forced to go through the venting smoke and heat to get to the seat of the fire,” he added. “Many fire-ground injuries to firefighters happen when trying to manage fires that occur in basements as the risk of collapse or flashover is enhanced in these incidents.”

Officials add no firefighters were injured in the blaze and properly located and maintained smoke and CO alarms can save your life.
