Labour activists recognize Day of Mourning

Labour activists in the North Bay area will be taking time to mark the National Day of Mourning.

Officials say that every year, 1,000 workers lose their lives in the workplace, and many more workplace deaths aren’t counted by worker’s compensation systems.

North Bay and District Labour Council (NBDLC) President Henri Giroux says the National Day of Mourning is an opportunity to remember those who have fallen ill, become injured or killed at work while keeping an eye on the future.

“This year’s ceremony is very important because essential workers across the country are being put at risk every day,” said Giroux. “It is critical that we learn from the past and fight for better.”

The ceremony will be live-streamed at 10:45 a.m. on the NBDLC Facebook page. Ahmed Gaied, Secretary-Treasurer from the Ontario Federation of Labour is scheduled to be a guest speaker.
