Council votes against extending meeting length

Tuesday’s North Bay council meeting ended unexpectedly.  A by-law prohibits meetings from going past 11:00 p.m. unless a resolution is passed.  At 10:45 p.m. it was obvious council was not going to get through its agenda in the next 15 minutes.  So there was a resolution to extend the meeting to 12:30 a.m.  This way council could deal with its tax policy.  But given the lateness, several councillors including George Maroosis questioned the wisdom of starting an important issue so late at night.  Maroosis added he was sure most of the television audience watching from home had packed it in for the night.  Only two councillors wanted to keep going, but they lost the vote and the meeting ended at 10:50 p.m.  All the unfinished business will be re-introduced in two weeks.
