Police investigation Highway 17 fatal collision

The Nipissing West OPP says they are continuing an investigation into a fatal collision on Highway 17.

Police say the collision happened around 6:15 p.m. when a pickup truck that was travelling west towards Sturgeon Falls crossed the centre line and collided head-on with a transport that was travelling east. Upon impact, the truck caught on fire.

Officers say the driver of the transport was taken to the hospital with minor injuries, however, the driver and lone occupant of the truck was pronounced dead at the scene. The identity of the deceased has yet to be confirmed.

Officials say the collision closed down the highway between Sturgeon Falls and North Bay for five hours.

A post mortem will be conducted in Toronto. The investigation is continuing with the assistance of the OPP Collision Reconstructionist, an OPP Technical Collision Investigator in conjunction with the Office of the Chief Coroner, the Forensic Pathology Service and the Centre of Forensic Sciences.
