Residents weigh in on water meters debate

There’s no shortage on suggestions from North Bay residents on how council should implement rates for its water meters.  Gary Gardner wants a 20 percent fixed rate and 80 percent variable which he believes is fair and affordable for families.  Gardner also opposes condos and apartments paying less for water and wants these rates harmonized with residential ones so everyone pays the same.  Another homeowner, Stephen Hamilton, wants council to adopt Hydro One’s Time of Use plan to encourage water conservation.  Councillor George Maroosis likes the idea but doesn’t feel he got a straight answer from staff on why this isn’t possible.   Meanwhile property owner Anthony Koziol is worried about how water meters will affect his bottom line.  Koziol says over the past 17 years the CPI has risen 32 percent but water in his units has skyrocketed by 250 percent.  Koziol says many of his tenants have low incomes and he can’t pass on his ever-increasing utility costs to existing tenants.  Koziol believes he’s not alone in this area and is asking city council to be mindful when it strikes the rates for its water meters.
