NBPS: E-bikes used in laying 34th impaired charge

A 64-year-old North Bay resident represents the 34th impaired charge of 2020, according to the North Bay Police Service.

Police say officers on patrol on the new bikes made a traffic stop on Main Street. The driver was suspected of impaired driving. As a result, the man from North Bay has been charged with one count of operation of a motor vehicle with over 80 milligrams.

“Our officers continue to enforce driving-related offences,” said Deputy Chief Michael Daze. “This man is the 34th person charged with impaired driving this year. Looking at the first 5 months of 2020 compared to 2019 the police service’s impaired driving charges is up from 25 people charged in 2019 to 33 people charged in 2020.”

“This increase in the number of people charged may be a result of the additional impaired related training police have received in the last two years,” said Chief Scott Tod. “But what is unique about this charge is the fact that it is the first impaired related occurrence with police using the new e-bikes to keep our streets safe.”
