Seven new Forest Fires in North East Region

The Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry (MNRF) is reporting 7 new fires in the Northeast region.

Among those is one in the North Bay district located half a kilometre south of Lake Nipissing.

Waterbombers were on the scene of this 0.8 hectare fire yesterday evening.

MNRF information officer for the Northeast Region, Isabelle Chenard, says the fire status is now being held, with ground crews continuing to suppress the fire today.

“There may be smoke in the area as they continue to suppress the fire,” she said. “We want to remind the public that they can help us suppress forest fires by moving close to the shore when they see waterbombers in the area. A waterbomber will not scoop from a lake or river if encroaching watercrafts pose a safety hazard. Please be safe and stay clear.”

The new fires include

• Chapleau 6 measures 0.1 of a hectare and is located east of Lower Prairie Bee Lake, within The Shoals Provincial Park.

• Sudbury 51 is being held at 0.2 of a hectare. It is located approximately 10 kilometres southwest of Markstay, on the north side of Minister Creek.

• Sudbury 52 is a 0.1 of a hectare fire located west of Rushbrook Provincial Park.

• Sudbury 53 measures 0.9 of a hectare and is located north of Armstrong Lake.

• Sudbury 54 is north of Gull Lake, it measures 1 hectare.

• Sudbury 55 is located east of Fairbank Lake, waterbombers are on the scene this evening and FireRangers are assisting the municipal fire department with fire suppression.
It brings the tally of forest fired up to 292 on the year, with only 218 forest fires reported in 2019.

The fire hazard is high to extreme in most parts of the Northeast Region.
