Oak St terminal designated as cooling site

With the COVID-19 pandemic closing down the usual sites to escape the heat in North Bay (arenas, library, YMCA), the city is now offering the transit terminal on Oak Street for folks looking to cool off.

“It will operate as an alternate cooling centre location during declared heat events,” said City of North Bay’s communication officer Gord Young. “The health and safety of our community members and staff is the City’s top priority. Anybody in the city looking for an air-conditioned place to cool off can use the terminal. It’s a smaller space than any of our arenas but in the past, we haven’t had large crowds using the cooling stations. We believe it’s going to be sufficient enough to meet the demand.”

Young says that it’s the first time the City has used the terminal as a cooling station and if large crowds do appear, they will evaluate the situation and look at how they can move forward.

The cooling centre will operate daily between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. and will follow COVID-19 protocols to ensure users can practice physical distancing. A limited number of people will be permitted in the cooling centre at one time and the city encourages the use of non-medical masks or face coverings.
