11 Students across Nipissing and Parry Sound have made their summer a profitable one thanks to The Business Centre.
Youth and Entrepreneurship Coordinator for the organization Carla White says their Summer Company program (an annual government-funded program that allows students between the ages of 18-29 to start their own business over the summer and receive a grant up to $3,000.) has been successful this year despite how COVID-19 has affected the local job market.
“They have molded to [it], and their unique business ideas showcase why it is so important to encourage youth in business,” she said.
Out of the 11 students, all but three are in high school and have created some impressive businesses.
These include Albena Vassileva’s ‘Revamped Resumes’, Ethan Miller’s ‘Miller MetalWood Creations’, and Chandini Pulchart’s ‘The Bucket Hat Company’.
“Usually for the Summer Company program, we’d be recruiting at the high schools, Nipissing University, Canadore College… etc. So it was a little tougher to do our outreach and really focused on media and we were able to fill all of our 11 spots. That’s super exciting for us and exciting for the students as well,” said White.
White says that the students had to create their business plan and reach certain specifications and meet requirements and they were eligible to receive a government grant of up to $3,000 for the summer.
“For me… it’s really awesome to see these young people come up with ideas, adapt to COVID-19 quickly and successfully, and make their business ideas happen. It’s inspiring and motivating to watch them. Now that they’re settled and working their businesses, my job is more to help them expand, help with acquiring clients, and help them gain momentum. Other than that, they’re self-sufficient entrepreneurs now. […] It’s exciting to introduce to the kids that they can pursue their passions. Whether it’s sewing or baking… they can really turn it into something. For me, that’s the most exciting part of this program.” finished White.
