North Bay and District Labour Council gives back

The North Bay and District Labour Council (NBDLC) are unable to hold their annual Labour Day picnic this year due to the ongoing pandemic. But they are still giving back to the community.

This year, as part of the Canadian Labour Council’s Forward Together campaign, the NBDLC  is calling on all levels of government to replace lost jobs with better ones, strengthen Canadian public health care, as well as disaster-proof the social safety net, all while raising funds for local food banks.

“It’s a two-part campaign,” said NBDLC’s Communication Officer Lindsey Voisin. “It’s a way for us to still allow people to participate in a Labour Day activity in some way. Folks can register for a ‘Plan for Progress’ sign, which is part of our campaign calling on the government to put out a plan that will help us move past the pandemic. For every sign that people sign up for, we are donating $1 to local food banks. As well, any money donated to food banks, we will match dollar for dollar up to $5,000.”

Voisin says that they have 500 signs ready to go for people to order.

“We know the food banks are experiencing and will continue to experience increased demands as Fall approaches. This is a way for us to make good use of the money we would normally be spending on our Labour Day picnic.” said Voisin. “If the pandemic has shown us anything it’s that people were left behind. It showed us that a lot of people are vulnerable, forgotten about, and we don’t want to see that again. When we talk about disaster proofing our social safety net it’s really looking to those folks. To make sure that doesn’t happen again.”
