Conservation area addresses erosion after 2019 flood

The Eva Wardlaw Conservation Area will be under construction until the end of the week.

Troy Storms, Manager of Lands Stewardship for the North Bay-Mattawa Conservation Authority says that the area will see restoration being done to its Lake Nipissing shoreline.

“Flooding in 2019 caused substantial erosion along the water’s edge at Eva Wardlaw Conservation Area”, explains Storms. “Landscaping will improve the shoreline and reduce erosion in the future.”

A release from the Conservation Authority says that a 30-foot rock wall will be built where the shoreline was located in 2019 before the flood. The wall will be backfilled with gabion stone, or “rip-rap”, and covered by geotextile fabric and topsoil then hydro seeded.

There will also be a silt screen installed at the water’s edge.

Construction on the project is expected to be completed by September 11. The conservation area will remain open during the work.

The public is being asked to steer clear of the worksites this week.
