North Bay council will be writing a letter to the Premier asking the province to allow permanent residents to vote in municipal elections.  It means people could vote without yet being a Canadian citizen.

The head of the local multi-cultural centre, Don Curry, has lobbied for this change and is pleased with the outcome.  However he doesn’t like that a member of the local taxpayers association resorted to fear mongering on the issue.

Miles Peters believes immigrants could vote as a block to influence an election outcome but Curry disagrees.   Curry says there aren’t many immigrants in North Bay and those that live in the city come from dozens of countries so to say they would vote as a block is ridiculous.

North Bay now joins Toronto, Hamilton and Guelph who want the province to allow permanent residents to vote in municipal elections.
