OMB showdown likely for St. Rita’s Church re-zoning

The re-zoning of St. Rita’s Church in North Bay is expected to trigger a hearing to the Ontario Municipal Board.  That’s what residents told council Monday night if the church, former rectory and a plot of land were re-zoned to accommodate apartment units.  Council approved the re-zoning in a 7-4 vote.  Council is partially divided if the proposal is good planning for the neighbourhood but most sided with the property owner.  One issue was the parking and although the number of spaces was increased, homeowners believe the site will be used to park and store cars.  Meanwhile one homeowner, Jeff Parnell, disagrees with the developer’s claim that there’s a need for such units.  Parnell adds the 100-year-old building had a culture built around it and there’s a fear that will become lost.
