Bear incident sparks call for ending spring hunt

Two animal groups are using the vigilante killing of a bear in Sudbury as a springboard for the government to end the spring bear hunt.  Animal Alliance and Born Free say Sudbury was part of the pilot project where the government re-introduced the hunt to reduce the number of incidents of people encountering bears.

But both claim the number of bear complaints to police have doubled.  Born Free says this proves the bear hunt does not reduce conflicts between people and bears.

Both say the province should bring back its Bear Wise program to deal with bears wandering into communities because it worked well.
