Council endorses solar project with slim majority

North Bay council is endorsing a rooftop solar power project where local businesses lease their rooftops to generate solar energy.  The support passed 6-4.  One of the opponents is Daryl Vaillancourt who used to support these projects.

But now Vaillancourt says the programs make it harder for big industries to stay in business and he can no longer support them.  He says some businesses have moved to Quebec where power is cheaper because they can’t afford Ontario’s expensive electricity.

Meanwhile councillor Tanya Vrebosch supports the program.  Vrebosch agrees clean energy costs more but says that’s why we need to get after the province to offset expensive power for big industries with subsidies like it has for Sudbury.
